Description
The Oyster 42 is an aft cockpit configuration with a suite of amenities offered by the Oyster deck saloon concept, including the convenience of a deep, secure cockpit and easy access to the lower deck.
The cockpit is ideally positioned for protection in adverse weather conditions, as the deck saloon itself provides an effective breakwater, helping to deflect spray. Considerable time and effort have been dedicated to the yacht's profile and styling, resulting in the 42 being, from any angle, a classic Oyster and a handsome and elegant yacht by any standard.

notes
The Oyster 42's detailed design and pure pedigree set it apart from other yachts in this size range. Every yacht is built employing the same work practices and build quality as much larger models, and for this reason, the new Oyster 42 may not appeal to the widest spectrum of owners in this size range, as, like so many things in life, quality rarely comes cheap.
Although there are several mid-cockpit designs in this size range, Oyster felt that the required compromise—whether in reducing headroom in the aft passageway/aft cabin or in the excessive freeboard needed to achieve acceptable headroom aft—was simply too great. Many aft-cockpit designs achieve an aft owner's cabin by using an aft bridge deck to provide the required headroom.
Oyster believes this is the least satisfactory compromise of all, as the result can be a very exposed stair entry with many steps, which is always inconvenient and sometimes dangerous.
The Oyster 42 offers a truly comfortable cockpit, with ample space for the entire crew to enjoy cruising in comfort and safety. A very large sprayhood has been designed to cover a large area of the cockpit. This provides excellent protection for the crew while allowing easy access to the underside.
The solid linkage steering system feels very direct and provides good control, making the 42 a pleasure to steer. The wheel is sized to allow easy access around the steering pedestal to the helm position. The cockpit also provides access to a large general-purpose locker for equipment storage.

rigging notes
The rig is a sloop with a fully battened mainsail and lazy jacks for ease of handling. The halyard, kicker, and topping lift are brought back to the cockpit, and as an option, the reduction controls can also be moved aft, so almost all sail handling functions can be operated from the cockpit.
This Oyster has an additional removable staysail on a self-supporting cable.
The rig is designed with two studs and inboard chainplates, providing the dual advantage of a narrower halyard base for improved windward performance and a clearer side deck. A single center babystay is used, instead of forward lower stays, for a cleaner deck and to facilitate wing-and-wing sailing with a headsail or extended spinnaker.
